Tetbury RFC Match Report: Painswick 27 – 3 Tetbury Rugby Dursley RFC welcomed the Stroud Senior Combination Plate Finalists to end their respective successful seasons by battling it out for a fine piece of silverwear at Hounds Green. Unfortunately for Tetbury it was the team from a league above them that took the spoils after a hard aggressive game in the sun. Playing into the wind in the first half Tetbury battled hard to keep Painswick out with some impressive performances from Flyhalf Jenson, Flanker Porter and Centre Berry but in the end their defence was breeched which resulted in Tetbury having to chase the game. As the game broke up Tetbury tried to play their expansive style rugby but a long hard season seemed to reduce their usual number of support runners and a Penalty kick from Scrumhalf Prosser was the only reward in the game. All in all Painswick deserved their victory and the loss for Tetbury clearly demonstrates what the Club needs to do next year to gain promotion into Gloucester 1. MOTM: Ben Porter
Report: Tetbury Rugby 35 – 15 Rwihbina RFC Tetbury Slay the Welsh Dragon! Tetbury Rugby prepared in style for their Stroud Combination Plate Final this Saturday with a 5 try to 3 win over Welsh sister club Rwihbina at a damp Recreation Ground. This bi-seasonal friendly is always tightly contested with Rwihbina winning the earlier contest in Cardiff. However since then Tetbury have been playing some expansive rugby and comfortably put the Welsh to the sword at home. In a fairly competitive first half both sides played some good attacking rugby with Rwihbina getting the upper hand 3 tries to 2. However Tetbury had the reliable boot of Prosser who had a 100% kicking record all game securing an extra 10 points for the home side. Prosser also played a substantial part around the park and alongside Jenson was key in making the backline tick. Tetbury’s first try came from a backrow move on the halfway line, Goldstone fed Prosser who split the Rwihbina defence wide open and sped down wing. As Prosser drew the Fullback he neatly sent a ball inside to Flyhalf Jenson who touched down under the posts. Tetbury continued to chase down the Rwihbina lead. Some strong driving from the forwards created quick ball for the backs and Ferreria sent through a well weighted grubber kick into the Welsh 22m. Openside Porter burst through the line and outpaced the defence to touch down over the line. The home side tightened up their defensive line in the second half and stopped Rwihbina making any headway into their 22m. Tetbury’s attacking defence were also very skilled at winning turnover ball with Porter and Jenson doing the most damage. One such steal from Porter just outside the Welsh 22m was rewarded when Prosser and Jenson quickly fed Centre Berry who danced his way past 3 defenders to score under the sticks. Tetbury continued to stretch their lead and their forwards began to take control of the game. Powerful running from Reynolds and Porter sucked in the Visitors pack and quick recycled ball allowed Goldstone to pick up and charge over for Tetbury’s fourth try. As the game became looser in the final quarter Tetbury’s backline imposed their pace on the visitors. Jenson combined with Berry and Blackwell running from deep which tore holes in the Rwihbina defensive line. Quick recycling and support from the forwards worked the ball out to Jones on the left wing who fended off 4 tacklers and ran in from 40m to score under the posts. There were many contenders for Man of the Match this week with some outstanding performance from several players. The half back pair of Jenson and Prosser controlled the game and allowed the backline to function in the wet conditions. Porter’s aggressive defence and linking play was crucial in key areas of the game however Coach Mark Ring gave MOTM to Reynolds for his mobility and powerful ball carrying throughout the game. Tetbury now prepare for their Stroud Combination Plate Final against Painswick at Dursley RFC, kick off 1:30pm. Yours in Rugby
